About this recipe

A mezze plate is less a recipe than an arrangement: a selection of small Mediterranean dishes served together, perfect for grazing. It makes a light, satisfying lunch that needs almost no cooking.

This version pairs creamy hummus with oregano-marinated feta, olives, warm pita and a simple chopped cucumber and tomato salad. Add whatever else you like, such as falafel, stuffed vine leaves or roasted peppers.

Tips for success

  • Use our classic hummus recipe for a homemade centrepiece.
  • For packed lunches, use a divided container so the salad does not soften the pita.
  • Keep the mezze chilled if it will sit out longer than 2 hours.

Substitutions and variations

  • Add falafel, hard-boiled eggs or grilled chicken for extra protein.
  • Swap the feta for labneh or marinated tofu.
  • Use gluten-free crackers instead of pita.

Storage

To store: Refrigerate components separately for up to 3 days.

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Marinate the feta

Toss the feta cubes with the olive oil, oregano, red pepper flakes and lemon zest. Set aside while you prepare everything else.

  2. Step 2: Make the salad

Combine the cucumber, tomatoes, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and parsley.

  3. Step 3: Warm the pita

Warm the pitas in a dry skillet or low oven for 2 to 3 minutes, then cut into wedges.

  4. Step 4: Arrange

Spoon the hummus onto plates or a large platter and swirl the top. Arrange the feta, salad, olives, pita and any extra vegetables around it. Drizzle the hummus with a little olive oil.
